Air conditioning prices have risen the most in nearly 30 years

In November alone, prices increased by 4.22%, according to IPCA data.

Amid heat waves in the country, the price of air conditioning has increased the largest increase since the Real plan. According to data from the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index), an increase of 4.22% was recorded in the month of November alone.

This is according to the data from the IBGE Automatic Recovery System (Sidra), published by the newspaper The globe, in 1994, the increase was 5.26% – the year the real entered circulation. In 2023, the average cost of a device is still three times higher than inflation.

The heat didn’t just affect the air conditioners. The general average, equal to 0.28%, was influenced by the increase in food prices, due to changes in crops and production.

“Higher temperatures and greater rainfall in different regions of the country are factors that influence the harvesting of foods, especially those most sensitive to the climate, such as tubers, legumes and vegetables” explains the head of the research, André Almeida.

Heat waves in December

The Earth has set new heat records for six consecutive months, placing 2023 as the hottest in history, the European Union’s Earth observation programme, Corpernicus, announced. Heat waves have been felt in Brazil, especially in the South-East and Central-West.

According to Climatempo, in November Rio de Janeiro recorded a thermal sensation of 58.5ºC, the highest since the municipal meteorological service Alerta Rio began monitoring this parameter.

According to the meteorological service, a new heat wave is expected starting from Thursday the 14th.
