News on Netflix: Riverdale is back, but not in the way you think!

What is it about?

Set in 1960s India, Archie and the gang discover love, friendship and the future of Riverdale as real estate developers attempt to destroy the beautiful park.

Riverdale was twisted by the sixties

The Archies arrived on Netflix without much fanfare, and yet, this new adaptation of the Archie Comics series is very good. Travel to the small Indian town of Riverdale, where Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead use music to unite the residents and prevent the destruction of Hiram Lodge Historic Park.

On paper, The Archies doesn’t revolutionize the genre. But if you’ve been avidly watching the Netflix series that ended a few months ago, then you’ll be happy to see the characters on your screen. There are no murders or mysterious investigations here. The script, light as it may be, mainly revolves around the trio of lovers Archie/Betty/Veronica, with no thought of politics or Indian history relegated to the background. We’re here to sing about love and friendship and flirt with Pop’s milk.

The strength of this Indian feature film directed by Zoya Akhtar is that it turned into a musical comedy in the sixties. From colorful costumes to energetic dances to rock and roll music, the film features around ten songs in Hindi and English in 2 hours and 20 minutes. A beautiful nod to a famous band born in the 70s Excellent “Sugar Sugar”.

The Archies is pop, colourful, ultra-referential and with a totally predictable (or rather extravagant) Nanardesque tone that suits the 60s. Playing to the end of the game and keeping its cast fresh, this new Netflix movie can quickly annoy you if you’re not into the genre. As for the rest, they will have a long time ahead of them.
