He also said he will regain the country’s leadership position on the European continent and be a force in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The new Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, gave a speech in Parliament this Tuesday on his government plans (12). His election, held on Monday (11), marks the end of almost a decade of ultra-conservative government and paves the way for an improvement in the country’s relations with the European Union.
He said Poland will pressure the West to help Ukraine, regain a leading position on the European continent and become a force in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“We will call loud and clear for the total mobilization of the free world, the Western world, to help Ukraine in this war. I can no longer listen to politicians who say they are tired of the situation in Ukraine. They tell President Zelensky that they are tired of the situation. I will ask for help for Ukraine from day one.”he has declared.
Donald Tusk has committed, in his government plans, to promptly resolve the problems related to the protest of truck drivers at the border crossings with Ukraine, making the region safe.
He also assured that he will be an ally of the United States and that he will seek to improve relations with the European Union. However, he underlined his opposition to any changes to the EU treaties that would harm Polish interests.
🇵🇱 Donald Tusk was elected Prime Minister of Poland.
In the Polish Sejm, 248 deputies voted in favor of Tusk as leader of the united opposition, while 201 voted against and there were 0 abstentions.

Minority rights mentioned by Donald Tusk
Another relevant point concerns the internal policies in favor of minorities that Tusk spoke about throughout the campaign. He pledged to gradually reverse the conservative scenario established in Poland. In this sense, the prime minister promised to guarantee greater rights to the LGBTQ+ community and to revoke restrictive laws on abortion.
Donald Tusk also said that Polish women will quickly notice the changes. “We have developed a program so that every Polish woman feels a change in maternity care, protection of mothers and access to legal abortion. From the first days, we will take concrete actions to ensure that women feel an immediate improvement in terms of rights”he stated in Parliament.
However, it is not yet known how the government might change legislation on, for example, abortion. This is because some members of his own coalition do not support substantial liberalization.
