Barça secure first place in Group H, while the Belgians bid farewell to the competition

Barcelona was defeated by Royal Antwerp 3-2 this Wednesday (13th), in a match valid for the sixth and final round of the Champions League group stage, at the Bosuilstadion, in Antwerp, Belgium. Vermeeren, Janssen and Ilenikhena scored for the Belgian team, while Ferran Torres and Marc Guiu scored for Barça.

With this result, the team led by Xavi Hernández closes the group stage at the top of Group H, with 12 points – classified for the round of 16. Royal Antwerp bid farewell to the competition, finishing in last place, with just three points.

HOW WAS THE MATCH?

The home team had more chances in the first half and managed to open the scoring just two minutes into the match. Oriol Romeu falters in defense and the ball ends up at the feet of Vermeeren, who goes straight into Iñaki Peña’s net.

Barcelona manages to equalize in the 34th minute, through Ferran Torres. The Spaniard fired in a cross after receiving a beautiful pass from Yamal to leave everything level on the scoreboard – the only shot on target for the visitors in the opening stages.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Oriol Romeu failed once again and found himself defenseless. The ball fell to Janssen, who finished and put Antwerp back ahead on the scoreboard. During the final phase both teams had chances and everything was heading towards 2-1.

However, Marc Guiu left the match tied once again, in stoppage time. Barça’s joy at the late goal was short-lived, as Ilenikhena scored in the next move and ensured victory for the home team. What a match in Belgium!

Barcelona returns to the pitch this Saturday (16th), at 5pm (Brasilia time), to face Valencia in the Spanish championship. Royal Antwerp will face Anderlecht, Sunday (17), at 2.30pm, in the Belgian championship.
