The Minister of Justice only had a greater consensus than André Mendonça in the Senate plenary; Previously, at the CCJ, Flávio Dino had recorded the biggest refusal in the hearing among the current STF ministers

BRASILIA – The Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino, was approved on Tuesday the 13th by the Plenary Assembly of the Senate to fill the vacant position of Minister of the Federal Court (STF). The result of the vote, however, was one of the closest ever recorded compared to that of the other 10 members of the Court. Dino obtained 47 votes in favor and 31 against, which gave him the second worst performance among the current STF ministers.

The future STF minister had a 60% approval rating. Only André Mendonça he performed worse, with a 59% approval rating among senators present in the plenary. Previously, in the Senate Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), Dino had recorded the biggest refusal in the hearing among the current STF ministers. There were 17 votes in favor and 10 against, equal to 62.9% of approval.

The greatest consensus in plenary among the current ministers was that of CarmenLucia, appointed by Lula in 2006, when he was in his first term as President of the Republic. The judge had 55 votes in favor and only one against, a consensus from 98.1% of senators.

The lowest approval rating was that of Minister André Mendonça, appointed by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in 2021. Designated by the former Chief of Executive as having a “terribly evangelical” profile, Mendonça obtained 47 votes in favor and 32 against, or 59.5% of the votes in the Senate.

At 55, Dino will serve as STF minister for the next 20 years. The Minister of Justice returns to the Judiciary after 23 years. In 2006, he left his position as a federal judge to run for federal deputy, a role he held for two terms. Dino was also president of Embratur, governor of Maranhã for two terms and is a senator, a mandate from which he was removed to command the Ministry of Justice.
