Unprecedented: Set-Stop signals the driver’s intention to park the vehicle

Set-Stop, created by a Brazilian, is the first and only automotive signaling system that indicates the intention to park the vehicle

Parking in urban areas can represent a challenge for motorists, especially in large cities where the fleet is enormous. Congestion, lack of parking and tight maneuvers often make parking a very stressful experience.

The scene is familiar and common: you finally find that perfect space, you signal to get in, often having to open the window and use your hands, and yet, a car approaches from behind and hits your vehicle.

The space that was previously sufficient for maneuvering suddenly becomes non-existent. At this point the driver has no choice but to give up the seat or simply go around the block again and hope the seat remains available.

It is with this in mind that Vagner Bento de Souza came up with the idea and developed Set-Stop, the world’s first and only automotive signaling system that indicates the driver’s intention to park his car. Brazil could be the first country to test the invention.

The operating system is simple and uses the same external lights already present in the vehicles and the same accessories. In essence, the Set-Stop activates the brake light and the direction indicator alternately and intermittently, signaling to the following driver the intention to park.

“I believe that all of us, at one time or another, have experienced a situation like this and know how stressful this moment can be,” says Bento de Souza.

It was while witnessing one of these scenes live that the entrepreneur had the idea of creating Set-Stop. “This intrigued me, it is not possible that citizens should use their hands to signal their intention to stop. I didn’t rest until I reached a solution,” he explains.

The project already has a prototype ready and is expected to be presented to major car manufacturers early next year. It is still difficult to estimate the cost, but the impact on the pockets of those who purchase a vehicle with the technology installed should be minimal. Each car manufacturer will be responsible for designing the system that best suits their models, so the price may vary. In any case, for the consumer this cost will be included in the price of the new car.

The Set-Stop entrepreneur took care of patenting the invention, not only the idea itself, but also the different ways of activating the system. It will be up to the car manufacturers to remunerate them with royalties for the use of the technology; and the Government to evaluate the possibility of approving and/or creating a bill.

“We are aware that the success of Set-Stop depends on the population’s understanding, acceptance and adoption of the new mechanism. It will be necessary to educate the millions of drivers across Brazil. But, for example, as Brazilians have naturally and permanently adopted the use of seat belts, we believe that there will be great acceptance of the new signs, which aim only and exclusively at making life easier for everyone in traffic”, he explains Ricardo Giovanelli, from Set-Stop Marketing.

“If you ask me why no one thought of this before? I would say that precisely because it is a simple and obvious idea, it hasn’t occurred to anyone, says Vagner, author of the invention, with good humor.

In a world where mobility is an essential part of everyday life, it was time to find a creative and efficient solution to make parking as simple and automatic as giving the indicator to turn.
