Mom, I missed the plane: hold on for 10 minutes and 1 second and take a good look at the trash can!

A subtle nod to the famous Leo Gets, played by Joe Pesci in Lethal Weapon, a subtle reference to the McCallister family dog (which we never see in the film), a small cameo by the director’s wife, or the entire series. Hints on a few essentials for Christmas…

Like many pop culture monuments, Mom, I Missed the Plane, directed by Chris Columbus in 1990, is full of little details to see throughout the film.

As the end of the year holidays approach, when we generally enjoy rediscovering seasonal classics in decorating the tree or wrapping presents, let’s take a closer look at Kevin McCallister’s adventure, and in particular, an element that has been hidden from the beginning. A film that helps to explain many things.

The sequence that will occupy us today takes place the day before the McCallisters leave for vacation (who are scheduled to fly to Paris the next day for a vacation). In the evening, after ordering pizzas, they have dinner in the kitchen, but suddenly a fight breaks out between the children. Soda spills on the table, passports are wet, and Kevin’s dad uses paper towels to clean up the mess.

It’s at this point – at exactly 10 minutes and 1 second when Mr. McCallister throws the napkins in the trash – that you’ll have to hit the pause button on your remote. As you can see by looking at the top left corner of the trash can, Kevin’s dad not only threw away the wet paper, but – inadvertently – his son’s plane ticket! This is evidenced by the name “Kevin” written at the top of the document.

This little easter egg, which many viewers probably never noticed, still has a lot of meaning and easily explains how Kevin’s parents could forget their son at home the next day and leave him home alone over the Christmas holidays.
