Collor’s electoral treasurer was found dead, next to his girlfriend, in Maceió, in June 1996
In the podcast ‘Collor against Collor’, by the journalist Évelin Argenta, a character draws attention on the political scene, above all for the never clarified suspicions about his death: that of Paolo Cesare Fariasbetter known as PC Farias. He was treasurer of the electoral campaign of the then president of Brazil, Fernando Collor de Mello.
On 23 June 1996, PC Farias was murdered and his body was found next to that of his girlfriend. Susanna Marcolino, in his beach house, in Maceió. The police investigation concluded that the case was a murder followed by suicide, but was riddled with expert errors. Therefore, for many, the murder remains unsolved and at the time they thought about the possible burning of a file. Shortly after the murder, the authorities in Alagoas already considered the crime of passion.
The crimes of PC Farias
Officer Farias was indicted in 41 criminal investigations and his arrest was ordered on June 31, 1993, just months after Collor’s impeachment.
He was accused of creating an influence-peddling network and government corruption. PC denied his involvement and fled Brazil. His fate remained unknown until October, when the then Globo journalist, Roberto Cabrini, we found him in London. The treasurer subsequently fled to Thailand.
Arrested in Bangkok, Paulo César Farias was extradited to Brazil and tried. He was released on parole after serving a third of his sentence. Six months later he was found dead.
