Marinho cries after the goal against Santos and attacks Rueda: ‘He brought the team down’

The former Peixe player scored one of the goals that helped them fall to Série B in the Brasileirão

Striker Marinho, currently a player for Fortaleza, has made some revelations regarding the controversy linked to the match against Santos, which culminated in the relegation of the Sao Paulo team to Serie B of the Brazilian championship. Leão do Pici’s number 15 said he cried in the dressing room after the goal scored in Vila Belmiro and admitted that he would have liked his former team to have remained among the elite.

– My desire was to play a great match, win and make Santos stay, but as fate wanted. I remember that when I arrived in the locker room my teammates were celebrating and I started crying. I said: “Guys, I’m happy we won, but I had the best time of my life living in this club, in this space.” A film playing in my head – said Marinho in the “Denilson Show” podcast.

– My feeling from the human side, I felt it a lot, but on the pitch I defend the colors of Fortaleza, I put food on the table, I am very honest with myself, with the institution, the club and my family. There’s nothing better than ending the season with a victory, even if it was a match against a club I was very happy with, but I’m a professional and I put work first,” he added.

Many Santos fans booed and cheered the former Alvinegro athlete that night, especially due to the player’s troubled departure in 2022. Marinho recalled the moment in which he was informed that his contract would not be renewed at Peixe and he vented, stating that his wish was to stay in Alvinegro.

– They said they would look for younger players, Santos’ plans were different and they didn’t want to renew with me. I wanted a career plan, to stay at the club. There was a proposal for Saudi Arabia, he said he wouldn’t negotiate with me and I said that was fine. When he said that he didn’t have a career plan for me, I said that the first proposal that came to me would have to be negotiated with me. I had negotiated with everyone. Soteldo, Luan Peres, Pituca, Veríssimo have gone… – concluded Marinho.

Furthermore, the Fortaleza player harshly criticized the current president Andres Rueda who, according to Marinho, was not transparent during his tenure and “brought the team down”.

– My respect and admiration remain intact. Now, Mr. Rueda’s lack of transparency shows, exactly, what Santos is experiencing and the guilt he has. He is a citizen who understands little about football, but he did everything to ensure that the fans always thought that that player would be the mercenary, the wrong person in history. And he comes across as a great guy who did the best he could. It’s a shame that this guy was in the presidency and brought the team down.

Marinho experienced one of the best moments of his career at Santos: from 2019 to 2022, he played 113 games with Peixe and scored 41 goals. Furthermore, the striker was elected King of America for his performance in the runner-up of the 2020 Libertadores and was the club’s top scorer for a good period.
