Sao Paulo could get rid of one of the main players in the squad to alleviate the club’s financial situation at the end of the year. Anticipating a deficit, the Tricolore sees an increase in demand from European teams for Beraldo and is already considering the possibility of selling the defender.
Recently, Sao Paulo’s governing council rejected an offer from Russian Zenit valued at 18 million euros (R$95 million), believing the value could increase. English Leicester have made a €20 million offer (around 107 million reals at current prices) and could sign Morumbi’s defender.
The club would not like to lose the young athlete in the near future, but welcomes the possibility of acquiring a significant sum and rebalancing its cash flow. President Julio Casares already allows the sale if he receives an offer considered “irrefutable”.
“Football is very dynamic. We already had proposals in the middle of the year and we didn’t sell, we wanted a competitive team in the Copa do Brasil and it worked, but now the reality is different. If a proposal arrives it is irrefutable for Sao Paulo and for the player, there is no way to back out. But for now we really have nothing,” the director said.
In a survey carried out by geSão Paulo is expected to close 2023 with a deficit of R$97 million, despite the R$88 million that entered the Tricolor’s coffers with the unprecedented Copa do Brasil title victory.
The board already expected to be in the red, having decided to postpone player sales throughout the year to keep the team competitive. The negative accounting result, however, exceeds what Tricolor expected for this period, i.e. a deficit of R$50 million.
In this context, a possible sale of Beraldo could help. If São Paulo negotiated the player for around R$107 million, they would pocket R$64 million, significantly reducing the loss.
The club would not receive the full value of the operation, as it only holds 60% of the athlete’s economic rights. Another 20% belongs to the defender himself and the last 20% is linked to the Piracicaba XV, which contributed to the player’s growth.
At 20, the young defender left Cotia to become untouchable and become one of the stars of San Paolo. If the boy is traded for these values, he could become the most expensive defender ever sold by Brazilian football in history. His contract with Tricolor extends until August 2028.
