The Brazilian scores and breaks through Brighton’s defence, opening the score to 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Gunners fighting for first place with Liverpool
Arsenal faced a tremendous battle against Brighton, this Sunday (17/12), in the 17th round of the English Premier League. Despite the offensive massacre (until the 15th minute of the second half, 18 shots to zero) the team worked hard to overcome the block. However, and fortunately, the Gunners have the Brazilian Gabriel Jesus. It was his goal that opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the second half, making it 2 – 0. Havertz doubled the lead at the end.
For Arsenal, the win took the team to 39 points, head-to-head for the lead with Liverpool. But Brighton, with 26 points, dropped to ninth place.
Brazilian Legion
Arsenal’s three Brazilians are on the pitch: Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus. Everyone played a good game. On the Brighton side, João Pedro (formerly Fluminense) started on the bench, but came on as a 15-year-old in the final phase and at least gave the team some attacking volume. Only after his entry did the team begin to conclude, even if without great danger. Another player who came off the bench and came on was defender Igor Julio, who was very discreet.
Arsenal pressure and no goals
The 0-0 first half score was unfair for Arsenal. After all, the home team had 60% of ball possession and machine-gunned their shots 15-0. Brighton, on the other hand, almost failed to reach the rival area and ended with ten men, resisting the pressure. Saka (twice), Gabriel Jesus (twice), Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhães and Havertz had opportunities to open the scoring. However, either they grazed the post or goalkeeper Verbruggen saved.
Gabriel Jesus drills the boom
In the second half, Arsenal continued to score heavily, forcing Brighton to shoot. So, after eight minutes, the goal finally arrived. Saka takes a corner and Gabriel Jesus, at the far post, scores with a minnow. Arsenal followed better, but after the arrival of Brazilian João Pedro, at least Brighton managed to mount some attacks. But the one with the best opportunities was the home team. Defender Dunk saves Odegaard’s goal off the line. And the Dane had another chance, but Verbruggen saved it. Finally, in the 43rd minute, Havertz received an unmarked pass from Nketiah on the left and closed the score to 2-0.
