FIFA announces the format of the Intercontinental Cup, the entity’s new tournament

After the Council, in Saudi Arabia, host of the 2023 Club World Cup, FIFA announced the format of the Intercontinental Cup. The tournament will be played annually.

The start date of the championship is next season and will have a similar format to the current one. The big difference is that there will no longer be participation from the host country and the winner of the Champions League is already in the final.

The other representatives compete in a playoff to see who advances to make the decision. In brackets, the winners of the Champions Libertadores and Concacaf duel. In the other there will be the continental champions of Africa, Oceania and Asia.

A draw will be made to decide who will face the Oceania team. Subsequently the choice will be reversed. The teams that triumph in both groups will face each other to decide who will win the Champions Cup.

Not all the dates of the Intercontinental Cup have been announced, only the semi-final and final, on December 14 and 18.
