Warning – The article below contains minor spoilers for “Wonka” as he returns in particular for his final scene. So please go ahead if you haven’t seen the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel yet.
Seen in a few scenes from the Tim Burton film, Willy Wonka’s youth is told in a feature film released on Wednesday, December 13. Or rather his first steps in the world of confectionery, the one who would become the greatest chocolatier before hiding golden tickets in some of his pastries.
In front of the camera of Paul King (Paddington and its sequel), Timothée Chalamet confronts greedy hotel owners, a lobby of chocolate manufacturers, as well as a corrupt priest and a policeman with lots of sweets. With the help of a young orphan and an Oompa-Loompa played by a strapping Hugh Grant.
And it is with him that we find him in the last scene: after the triumph, Willy Wonka takes possession of the ruined castle, which he bought and in which he intends to build his future chocolate factory. You don’t even have to imagine it because it comes out in his dance steps.
That Wonka the Movie provides such an obvious bridge to the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is, of course, no surprise. But will this ending herald a sequel that deals with the years that separate us from Roald Dahl’s novel? Or its new adaptation?
“I’m not sure I’d have the courage to do Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again because it’s already been done so well. Twice.”On this topic, Paul King answers the films of Tim Burton and Mel Stewart. “But Willy Wonka is a great character. I loved making this movie and working with Timothy, and I think there are still steps between the end of Wonka and the events of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
“So if we’re lucky enough to be able to continue, I’d be delighted.” Therefore, the appointment is made on Wonka 2: “Not for six years then.”, Paul King replies with a laugh, off camera. Goes in 2029.
