This is definitely one of the funniest scenes of The Crown’s season two finale. Episode 5, which begins with the nightmare of the Queen imagining herself being shunned by the people, sees Prime Minister Tony Blair crowned “King Tony” by the American press following his exploits on the international stage.
The popularity of the prime minister was clearly not accepted by the queen, especially since the latter decided to attack the monarchical institution by demanding budget cuts and the abolition of jobs among the property employees.
A real shame for the Queen, but she still got her revenge on Tony Blair thanks to the Women’s Institute.
Founded in 1915, this community organization brings together women from the UK and the Commonwealth to support rural communities and strengthen the position of women in British society. This extremely popular movement was actively supported by Elizabeth II throughout her reign.
The members of the Women’s Institute clearly did not have Tony Blair in their hearts. The latter realized this while speaking before the association, discussed its political program and reform projects.
The Crown shows the Prime Minister being heckled by women attending a gathering. Not with cheers, but with clapping of hands, sufficient to drown out the voice of the latter, who then goes to all the trouble in the world to complete his intervention.
The scene really took place and there is even a video archive describing this great moment of loneliness experienced by Tony Blair and the lesson in humility offered to him that day by members of the Women’s Institute.
