With less than 400,000 admissions in France, the friendly comedy Le Gendre de ma vie starring Cad Merad and Julie Gayet can be (re)discovered tonight on TF1.
Released in cinemas at the end of 2018, Le Gendre de ma vie tells the story of Stéphane and Suzanne, the parents of three young women. The picture may seem perfect, but Stephen never had a son and always dreamed of having one.
To make up for this frustration, he monopolizes his sons-in-law and falls in love with them faster than his daughters. When Alexia, his youngest daughter, decides to leave Tomas, a brilliant rugby player and her father’s new idol, for a young doctor she can’t stand, Stefan struggles.
Tasty anecdote: The Sid-in-Law of My Life was originally an American project, the script was developed at the Lionsgate studio for director Tyler Perry, to whom we owe the Madea film series. “The story of this selfish man who thinks he’s miserable because he doesn’t have a boy spoke to me because I have two daughters myself: without sharing regrets, I think I understand how he feels.”laughs François Desanna, director of Le Gendre de ma vie.
“I must help him realize the absurdity of the mood”he continues. “A lot of the work involved removing American cultural elements and transferring them to France (the rugby player was obviously an American football player). On the other hand, I felt very comfortable with the tone. That skill that American comedy has. Push the cursors with justice and movement.”
Desagnat was inspired by several well-known comedies dealing with the theme of a son-in-law arriving at his partner’s family, such as My Father-in-Law and Me or Crazy Stupid Love.
“But the idea of inversion seemed interesting to me: the “man” brought into the family is not greeted with suspicion, but with enthusiasm.”he notes. “From this first inversion, my intention was also to break the classic and old-fashioned family patterns, in a deliberate and subtle way: Julie Gaye chairs the table, not Cad Meradi, she never cooks dinner, and the only time she is in the kitchen is to clean her sculpting equipment… “
“All my films explore family themes”At the end, he observes Desagnet. “Family appeals to me: the love that manifests there in various forms, the events that build it, the unspoken things, the tensions, the dysfunctions, the brotherhood, the parent-child relationship… I am drawn to it all. “interested.” Are you ready to spend an evening with this fun family?
Tonight on TF1 at 21:10.
