A new plebiscite was held on Sunday (17) for the implementation of the new Constitution in Chile, but Chileans rejected the proposal. This vote is part of the 2020 constituent process, triggered by a wave of demonstrations against the high cost of living and inequality.

In 2022, Chileans categorically rejected the first proposal, which was dominated by the left. But efforts were promised to create a new Constitution to replace the current one, in place since the Pinochet era, which dates back to the period from 1973 to 1990.

In September this year, a new proposal was presented, dominated by right-wing forces. But it was voted on and rejected in last Sunday’s plebiscite (17).

This new proposal has been assessed by some analysts as even more conservative than the Constitution adopted during the dictatorship. In short, it emphasizes private property rights, as well as establishing strict regulations on immigration and abortion.

Counting of votes in the plebiscite

At 10.30pm on Sunday (17th) 99.86% of ballots had been counted, indicating a difference of 11 percentage points in favor of the option against the change. 55.76% voted against and 44.24% opted for amending the Constitution.

It is worth noting that before the plebiscite took place, the president Gabriele Boric has declared that he will not try to push for a third constitutional revision. However, it will evaluate the possibility of proposing changes to the current constitutional text.
