Like every year, the end of the year marks the event movie season on Netflix. Thus, Maestro, performed, co-written and directed by Bradley Cooper, is part of this prestigious line. It tells the story of composer Leonard Bernstein and will be available on Netflix from 9:00am on December 20th.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and is already a favorite in the awards race. It tells the complicated love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan) – a story that spans more than 30 years. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton and Miriam Shore round out the cast.
Rather than a classic biopic, Maestro presents itself as a melodrama and fresco about the love story of a famous conductor/composer and his wife. Bernstein married actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn in 1951, and perhaps best known for scoring the western story, the couple split their time between New York and Connecticut. The affairs he had over the years with both men and women, even if they were carried out with Felicia’s consent, strained the couple’s relationship.
Bradley Cooper wrote the screenplay for Maestro alongside Oscar-winning Spotlight screenwriter Josh Singer, with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg producing.
