Aquaman 2: How does the first movie with Jason Momoa end? We summarize it for you

On December 19, 2018, Aquaman made his first solo dive into French theaters. Upon arrival, 3,289,776 viewers and $1.152 billion at the worldwide box office. That was just five years ago, and water has flowed under the bridge ever since, going so far as to submerge the DC universe that began with Man of Steel and is living its final hours before James Gunn and Peter Safron take over.

And it’s the superhero to whom he owes his biggest box office success that the world is getting ready to worship. Titled The Lost Kingdom and still directed by James Wan, the sequel has been a long time coming since it was delayed several times, leaving everyone a little more time than expected to catch up on the first opus, which is available on Netflix and Prime Video .

Haven’t had time to watch it (again) and aren’t afraid of spoilers? Don’t worry, we’ll summarize the movie for you!

It all starts in 1985. While Back to the Future and Breakfast Club are in theaters, a funny story begins for Tom Carr (Temuera Morrison) when he discovers an inhabitant of the kingdom of Atlantis, injured at the base of a lighthouse, is a guardian.

A land man and a sea woman fell in love and lived happily together with only one child, Arthur. Until the day her fellow Atlantans find her, determined to bring her home.

An explosive action scene follows and gives us the opportunity to see Nicole Kidman struggling for a consistent shot, something we never imagined we would see in cinemas in late 2018.

Nevertheless, he must leave the relationship to return to King Orvax, whom he was promised, but leaves Arthur with the tribe to prevent harm to them if they are found.

Thirty-three years later, the boy has grown up and after long training with his mentor Vulko (Willem Dafoe), he has become Aquaman. The superhero is just as great in local bars (which would become his trademark, see The Flash post-credits scene) as he is at the bottom of the oceans.

Like when he saves a Russian submarine from a pirate attack, leaving their leader Jesse Kane (Michael Beach) to die. Without imagining the consequences this would have on his life (and his film adventures).

Because he draws his son David (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who still doesn’t call himself Black Manta, to visceral hatred. But is already playing a role in a large-scale conspiracy involving humans that King Orm (Patrick Wilson), ruler of Atlantis and Arthur’s half-brother, is using to attack earthlings (or surfacers) and make them pay for pollution and overfishing. Among other matters for which they are held responsible.

In idea, his quest is noble. In practice, less. Because it requires manipulation (and attacks he orchestrates) to convince at least three of the Seven Kingdoms to join his cause. Arthur’s two worlds then collide when a giant wave crashes ashore and nearly kills his father.

And when Mera (Amber Heard), daughter of King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) and Orm’s bride, tells him she can fight for the latter’s throne. Especially if he has King Atlantean’s Trident, forged millennia ago but lost in the fall of Atlantis, otherwise it would be too easy.

Under the Ocean (Famous Tune)

So the hero is sure to dive in and barely have time to admire this giant octopus that plays percussion and apparently failed in the casting of The Little Mermaid that they are caught in the middle of the road brother.

Since we’re only halfway through the film, Orm and Arthur’s confrontation becomes the former’s advantage, with no possible argument. But the other owes his salvation to Mera, who manages to evacuate him, and to Vulko, who gives them a cylindrical artifact containing a message from Atlant that lets them know where his triangle is. with the first stop in the Sahara desert.

At that point, someone (the music supervisor, if you don’t mind) thought to himself that it would be original to have a cover art for the beginning of the series. “Africa” Toto was signed by Pitbull. And that’s it, for now. Fortunately for them, the heroes discover an ancient Atlantean city on the scene, and the Atlantean message they finally hear is sent to Sicily.

There, Arthur and Mera find that their search is often interrupted by explosions. And the hero finds David Kane, who, by the way, calls himself Black Manta. In addition to fighting in a high-tech suit of his own creation, with… Atlantean weapons. A long action scene and a brutal fight later, the villain appears dead (spoiler: he’s not).

The future Aquaman and his partner reach the third and final stage of their journey: the Pit, a mysterious sea inhabited by terrible creatures (where director James Wan reminds us that he loves horror movies), into which Atlana was thrown after being. Executed upon his return to Atlantis for giving birth to Arthur.

But – a huge twist! – It’s still alive. And he can hint to his son that the mythical triangle is not far away, but he will have to triumph over Carathen, a monster that will only let go of the rightful king of Atlantis (and who in the original version has the voice of Mary Poppins, this is not a joke).

And that King turns out to be Arthur, who we see emerge from behind the waterfall, wearing armor made of gold scales, weapon in hand, in one of the most famous shots of the feature film.

Always accompanied by Mera, he helps the last kingdom that Orm tries to subdue in order to attack the Surfacers. Clinging to Karaten, which he must have tamed, and with the help of underwater creatures he can communicate with, he defeats his half-brother’s army. and comes face to face with him for revenge.

Because this time we’re at the end of the story, Arthur ‘Aquaman’ Curry triumphs. Thanks to his new trident and what Vulko taught him, when the battle takes place on Earth. But Atlana prevents him from killing his half-brother, despite the pleas of the latter, who is captured. As long as his mother joins his father, the hero can ascend to the throne of Atlantis.

All’s well that ends well? On paper, yes. Actually, less. Because David ‘Black Manta’ Kane was rescued at sea by a certain Dr. Stephen Chin (Randall Park), seen earlier on the TV screen and convinced of the existence of Atlantis… which he finds traces of in the villain’s technology. outfit asking him to help find Aquaman.

In the next episode…

And it will be in the sequel. Still signed by James Wan, it is expected to hit our theaters on December 20th. Based on the images revealed so far, Black Manta is determined to get revenge on Arthur and now he is in possession of the legendary black trident, which makes him even more terrifying and deadly.

To defeat him and save the underwater kingdoms, Arthur will have to unite… Orm. What will be Jason Momoa’s last adventure in Aquaman. And the final DCEU movie, as envisioned ten years ago.
