Available on Netflix starting Friday, Maestro is Bradley Cooper’s second film as a director. He also takes responsibility for interpreting Leonard Bernstein, delivering a stunning performance. But the genesis of this story is surprising to say the least.

If the film today is co-produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, two Hollywood heavyweights, both were approached to direct the film after the rights were acquired in 2008, and thus before it went to Bradley Cooper.
During Maestro’s presentation at the Venice Film Festival last September, co-producer Christy Makosko Krieger revealed that Spielberg had handed the directorial reins to Bradley Cooper after his 2018 directorial debut A Star Is Born saw just 20 minutes.
“Stephen was about to understand West Side Story,” explained Christy Krieger.He wasn’t going to direct it anymore, and Bradley, at that point, I think it was March or April of 2018, said, “Stephen, if you’re not going to direct this movie, can I write it? I just finished A Star Is Born. I’m doing the final touches, you can watch the film and if you like the film I’ll be happy to do the work.’“
She goes on to explain that she, Maestro co-writer Josh Singer and Steven Spielberg were invited by Bradley Cooper to screen his musical drama in which he starred alongside Lady Gaga:Stephen watched the movie and after 20 minutes he said, “You’re going to direct this movie, you have to direct the maestro.”“.
Christie Krieger added that Spielberg continued to work closely with Cooper on the film. “Spielberg was Bradley’s sounding board. He read every version of the script. He watched every frame of the film with Bradley. He was involved in all of this“.
