Matt Damon as Aquaman?
In 2014, when Zack Snyder had just been tapped to direct Justice League, a huge rumor emerged: that Warner wanted Matt Damon to play Aquaman. But the actor, revealed by Will Hunting in 1998, was never actually approached by the big-name studio… it’s just a rumor in the hallway, just like the one who saw Damon as Robin in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Justice.
A few months later, in October 2014, Jason Momoa was officially cast as Aquaman in Justice League and subsequently in other DC Cinematic Universe films.
A hell of a record!
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a sequel to Aquaman that was released in 2018. Jason Momoa plays the superhero, surrounded by, among others, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. first part. James Wan is also back behind the camera.

An amazing source of inspiration
Even though Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a superhero movie, that didn’t stop James Wan from incorporating elements of his favorite genre: horror. Thus, in an interview given to Total Film, he named Mario Bava’s Planet of the Vampires as the main source of inspiration for his film! The Italian feature film released in 1965 takes us to an unknown planet where some astronauts are overcome by a murderous fury in a breathless atmosphere.
The inspiration is felt especially by Manta’s giant submarine and the uniforms of his group of mercenaries.
New costume for Aquaman
Costume designer Richard Sale made several adjustments to the legendary Aquaman costume designed for the first opus. Staying true to the original style, he tried to incorporate lighter materials and make it easier to dress Jason Momoa, especially for stunts and fight scenes. Aquaman’s green and gold suit has so many scales that it took three different craftsmen three months to design and attach each scale to the suit.
Underwater shooting
For the first film’s underwater scenes, the team used sets with blue backdrops and suspended the actors using harnesses to create the illusion that they were floating. For this sequel, the visual effects team adopted a completely new method to allow the actors and the director to feel more free. Thanks to Eyeline Studio – a completely new revolutionary technology – James Wan and his team were able to create a 360° water world.
Eyeline Studio uses a purpose-built circular booth equipped with 136 cameras – mounted from the ground to eye level – that observe the actor. She, in costume, plays the stage in the center of the salon, wearing a headband covered with sensors that allow, thanks to visual effects, to create the feeling that her hair is floating in water. The images were then integrated into scenes shot against a blue background and carefully assembled with avatars, settings and sea creatures generated through infographics.
