This end of the year on Netflix was marked by the release of two big installments: The Maestro with Bradley Cooper and Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder’s new blockbuster. This space opera takes us to a peaceful colony on a distant moon suddenly threatened by tyrant armies. Its inhabitants place all hope of survival in the hands of a mysterious stranger.
Our take on Rebel Moon
Netflix subscribers responded anyway, as Rebel Moon is currently the most-watched movie in the world, taking the top spot in several countries, including France. Its AlloCiné profile already has more than 1,000 entries and 200 reviews in just a few days, attesting to the enthusiasm surrounding the blockbuster.
But what exactly were they thinking? Rated 2.7/5, Rebel Moon is a divisive film. If about ⅓ of viewers applaud the visual identity of Zack Snyder and his world, they still express disappointment with the content: with an overlong score, characters lacking depth and issues that are too vague, the space opera seems to suffer from the director’s strategy. His plot was cut into two parts.
“A sort of mash-up of Star Wars, Dune and 7 Mercenary, the film lacks scope and only touches on its potential.” Not even the Dantesque action scenes that made Snyder famous are here, there are still his famous slow motions, but everything seems scaled down, things are blurred.” (2985)
“However, Rebel Moon’s ambition and uneven pace prevent it from reaching its full potential. The film’s predictable plot and reliance on familiar sci-fi tropes make it somewhat inspired; The characters are often caricatures or predictable. Overall, Rebel Moon is an average sci-fi adventure that will please fans of the genre, but may leave others wanting more.” (Harry 6489)
“The world is posed to be huge. Is this the reason for canceling the movie? were you bored It depends on the expectations. If we’re expecting a vulgar blockbuster that’s a compilation of fight scenes that brings together undeveloped characters for over two hours, the film doesn’t live up to expectations; It is a long film, the first part. As far as I’m concerned, it’s been a real treat. ” (LMC-3)
“Do the same, keep an eye on those who know how to remake all these classics and offer all these references to moviegoers without overdoing it. No, the characters are not boring, each has its own truth, its own connections and past. They are not overcrowded – the heroes are numerous – the mercenaries are well modernized. So let’s stop being jealous or lecherous. Let’s not taste our pleasure, dammit!” (Laurent G)
“Visually, there’s nothing to say, we clearly recognize the Zack SNYDER touch. Indeed, the photography is excellent and the special effects are quality. In addition, the casting is excellent and the various creatures and costumes are well done. However, the characters lack depth and the whole thing is not very sophisticated… As a result, halfway through the film, boredom sets in, especially since there is quite a lot of length.” (lia)
In any case, the number of viewers is closely monitored by Netflix, which is already actively preparing the promotion of the second part, which will be released on April 19. The receipt of the two opus will be crucial in knowing whether the platform will produce a third installment, which Snyder and his team are already working on.
Netflix should also be working on a Director’s Cut version, expected later this year, which is a re-watch of Fire Child, but with more violence and which will be no less than 3 hours long. In short, we haven’t heard the last of Rebel Moon.
