When it comes to beauty, appearance and aesthetics, hair is of enormous importance and with the increase in hair loss worldwide, the search for transplants that alleviate or correct this problem is growing at a rapid pace.
Data from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – or International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, for its acronym in English – show that searches for the procedure grew by 152% between 2010 and 2021 worldwide. A report by Global Market Insights highlights that the hair transplant market was valued at $5 billion in 2022 and annual growth is expected to be 21% through 2032.
Plastic surgeon and trichologist Patrizia Marchesi confirms the increase in demand, given that Brazilians are included in the statistics.
“Men and women are turning to hair transplantation to treat conditions such as baldness and frontal fibrosing alopecia, to increase hair density. It is important to underline that an evaluation must first be done by a specialist professional to see if this is the best option because some diseases can make the transplant difficult or even prevent it,” she explains.
Hair transplant is also indicated for those suffering from trauma and burns, but the main indication is male pattern baldness.
“The surgery must always be performed by surgeons to ensure a safe and effective result,” warns Marques.
The hair is pulled from the back of the head
According to the specialist, the transplant is carried out with healthy hair extracted from the back of the head, after pre-operative treatment to strengthen the donor region.
“The extracted hair is implanted in the necessary area, usually the front, and the main method is called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction),” he explains.

According to the plastic surgeon and trichologist, the procedure takes some time, generally 6 to 12 hours depending on the area and amount of hair to be transplanted, and should only be performed in a suitable surgical center.
“The postoperative period is very calm and in the first three months it is normal for the transplanted hair to grow, then fall out and then grow back. Therefore, the final result is obtained approximately 1 year after the operation,” concludes Patrícia.
