Joaquim accepts the salary reduction and remains at Santos for next season

Santos announced Joaquim’s stay on Thursday. The defender has agreed to reduce his salary to stay at Peixe in 2024.

The new board of directors of Alvinegro Praiano, led by president Marcelo Teixeira, is negotiating with the athletes to reduce the salary. In addition to the defender, goalkeeper João Paulo, midfielder Tomás Rincón and forward Julio Furch have also reached an agreement to stay at Vila Belmiro.

“The defender has demonstrated commitment to the current situation of the club and confidence in the project, which mainly involves a return to Série A in the Brasileirão,” the club wrote in a statement.

Joaquim arrived in Alvinegro Praiano in February this year, for 3 million euros (at the time about R$ 16.7 million). Since then there have been 39 commitments, two goals and four assists.

The 24-year-old defender leads Santos’ key defensive stats in the Brasileirão. In 31 appearances there were 45 tackles, 10 interceptions, 16 saves and 320 hits according to the data of the SofaScore.

Next season, Alvinegro Praiano will compete in two competitions: Paulistão and Série B of the Brazilian championship.

In addition to the salary reduction, Santos also announced the signings of left-back Jorge, right-back Aderlan, defender Gil and midfielder Giuliano for 2024. The club still has ongoing conversations with striker Willian Bigode and midfielders Cazares and Otero.
