Understanding Corinthians’ plan to take Gabigol from Flamengo

Corinthians maintains its desire to sign striker Gabigol for the 2024 season. In recent days, the Timão management received approval from the Flamengo board of directors to negotiate directly with the 27-year-old athlete’s staff.

Flamengo has no problem dealing with Gabigol in this transfer window, but Rodolfo Landim and his associates don’t want to be “burned” by the Rossoneri fans, given that the deal concerns a club idol for a national rival.

But why shouldn’t Flamengo disapprove of the departure of one of the greatest idols in the club’s history? For the simple fact that the player has no prestige with coach Tite. With the former Brazil coach, Gabi is Pedro’s reserve and nothing suggests that this scenario could change for 2024. This also generates dissatisfaction in Mengão’s number 10.

In contact with the news from Gazeta Esportiva, Gabigol’s staff explained that the athlete will return to Flamengo in January, as scheduled. Still no contact from Timão’s board of directors, despite the approval of the Rossoneri management.

Corinthians intends to arrange this meeting to present a project, in which Gabigol would be the big “star” of the team. Contrary to what happens at Flamengo, he would become an absolute starter, with a high playing time. Timão intends to offer the athlete his salary cap, but the value is lower than what the player currently receives.

If Gabigol accepts Corinthians’ offer, the club will take the next step, namely negotiations with Flamengo, with whom the attacker has a contract until the end of 2024.

Timão’s future board of directors is aware of the complexity of the negotiation, but intends to reach a consensus, with agreements involving athletes, money and also taking on part of the debt that Flamengo owes to Gabigol. Nothing is ruled out to convince Fla and Gabigol.

The report noted that winger Wesley, just 18, is a name that could serve as a bargaining chip in negotiations involving Gabigol’s arrival. Other players are also evaluated.

The key to black and white optimism comes down to Tite. After all, Corinthians wants the player, Fiel Torcida approves the purchase, Gabigol intends to play more and, with Tite at the helm of Fla, the Rossoneri board will have to have a high-cost problem to manage if he stays there.

Side conversations

Corinthians are also in talks with Flamengo to deal midfielder Fausto Vera, seen as a bargaining chip by the new Corinthians board. In the deal, the Argentine midfielder would move to Gávea, while Thiago Maia and another Flamengo name would go to Parque São Jorge.

This ‘other athlete’ is still being studied by both parties. Right back Matheuzinho was initially considered in the negotiation, but the option has now been discarded.

Thiago Maia approved the idea of the transfer, also thinking about more spaces, more minutes on the pitch in 2024.
