The rivalry between Masashi Kishimoto and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda was the fuel that pushed the Naruto author to make his story more… cruel.

Just as manga and anime protagonists face battles that help them become better and stronger, sometimes a real-life rivalry also serves to advance a story. This is what happened narutothe series that tells the story of the young Naruto Uzumaki.



At first, the author Masashi Kishimoto had a (somewhat one-sided) rivalry with Eiichiro Odathe creator of A piece. And thanks to this difference, he managed to elevate his ninja manga to one of the greatest in the Japanese magazine Shonen Jump.

The desire to surpass Oda was the fuel for Kishimoto. But it wasn’t just the publication of One Piece that influenced Naruto, but also the tone of the story itself. Because one of the characteristics of ninja manga is that the plots become much crueler and the characters end up involved.

And as Kishimoto himself admitted in a 2013 interview with Jump Versus, the main reason for this turning point was to give Naruto its own personality to go in the opposite direction to One Piece.

“One Piece is basically a very light story, so I always thought of Naruto as the opposite. In Naruto, I try to make the battles more serious by killing characters, since Oda says he doesn’t kill many characters,” the mangaka admitted. “Otherwise, I don’t think Naruto would be so popular.”
