Gil de Ferran, former Brazilian driver who won the Indianapolis 500, dies


Brazilian motorsports fans are in mourning this Friday

Brazilian driver Gil de Ferran died on Friday afternoon at the age of 56 after suffering cardiac arrest while driving in Opa-Locka, Florida, United States. He was testing a car on the private circuit The Concours Club, he felt ill and stopped at the entrance to the pits. He was taken to hospital, but did not survive.

Ferran became famous for winning the Indianapolis 500 in 2003. His CV also includes a victory in English Formula 3 and a two-time CART (currently IndyCar Series) championship. He leaves behind his wife Angela and children Anna and Luke.

The former driver currently worked as a consultant for McLaren in Formula 1.

The Brazilian Automobile Confederation has released a note signed by its president, Giovanni Guerra, lamenting the death of the former driver.

The Brazilian Automobile Confederation welcomes with deep sadness the news of the death, in the United States, of the Brazilian driver Gil de Ferran, which occurred on the afternoon of Friday 29th.

At the age of 56 on November 11, Gil suffered a heart attack at a private car club located in Opa Locka, Florida. He was promptly rescued and taken to a local hospital, but did not survive.

Gil de Ferran shone on Brazilian and international tracks, with particular emphasis on the British Formula 3 title, his second Indy championship (under the CART banner) and victory in the 2003 Indy 500. He also won as a driver and owner of a team in American Endurance. . He currently works for the McLaren team as one of its directors.
