Commander of the Sao Paulo Football Federation (FPF) since 2015, Cartola has already been appointed interlocutor in the highest entity of Brazilian football
This Friday, Reinaldo Carneiro Bastoscommander of Sao Paulo Football Federation (FPF)he won the support of seven state federations and 30 clubs in his pre-candidacy for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
The support was announced by the Sao Paulo Federation itself, in a manifesto signed by the four big clubs in the state. In addition to them, other Serie A and B clubs in the Brazilian championship are signatories of the movement led by the FPF.
Reinaldo is in his third term in the country’s largest football association. He was first elected in 2015, when he left the vice-presidency of the FPF after Marco Polo of Nero, head of the entity, will be elevated to command of the CBF. In 2018, in an empty election in which he was the only candidate, he was reconfirmed for another four years starting the following year. In 2022, by acclamation, he was re-elected until 2026.
His tenure in the FPF was marked by the implementation of video refereeing (VAR) in the Campeonato Paulista, initially from the knockout stage in 2019, and expanded to the group stage two years later. However, his command was also surrounded by friction with Palmeiras, in which the club accused the entity of directly interfering in the referee’s decision to withdraw a penalty from midfielder Ralf, of Corinthians, to midfielder Dudu during the final of the tournament. After the defeat in regulation time and on penalties, the Alviverde board decided to interrupt institutional relations with the Federation.
Reinaldo’s name associated with the highest entity of Brazilian football emerged in 2021, after the Rio de Janeiro court annulled the general assembly that changed the way of voting for the position and elected Rogério Caboclo president. At the time, together with the president of Flamengo, Rodolfo Landim, he was appointed intervener, but the Court of Justice of Rio annulled the decision after a few days.
In addition to the top hat of the San Paolo, the dispute for the office of the Confederation sees the pre-candidacy of Flavio Zveiter, former vice-president of the CBF itself and former president of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD). The elections, however, do not yet have a specific date.
