Boulevard de la mort is broadcasting this evening on Arte, find out why this ambitious project of Quentin Tarantino could not find its audience in its 2007 release.
On the Boulevard of Death, and then with Planet Terror, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rogriges devised a surprising concept for the audience, while reviving the disappearing cinematic tradition. To them, unfortunately, the audience did not turn up. But why ?
Recall that from the beginning this project was primarily conceived as a cinema. Both Rodriguez and Tarantino plan to make a 60-minute film, including fake trailers. The idea was to offer you a “Grindhouse” session that features dual programs that are valuable to two filmmakers.
The first film is Tarantino’s death proof (Boulevard of Death), and the second is Planet Terror, signed by Rodriguez. The fake trailers include Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, Jason Eisner and Rodriguez.

For so many theories. Except that in practice it does not go as planned. Instead of a two-hour session with a false interval, the distributor (Weinstein’s company) ends up with more than three hours of finished product and budget and schedule overruns.
The film’s executive producer, Harvey Weinstein, has pre-sold the concept in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or even Australia and South Africa. The rest of the countries have the right to two separate films and no “break” trailers.
When it came out on American soil on April 6, 2007, Diptych Greenhouse crashed into the box office, bringing in 11.5 million over the weekend, where all 20 were waiting. Ranked 4th in this week’s rankings after Will’s comedy. Ferrell Les Rois du patin, Disney animated film Welcome to Robinson and Family When do we stop? Carries an ice cube.
Weinstein has since reviewed his copy, and most countries have ended up with two separate films. Boulevard de la mort was released in France on June 6, 2007 and Planète Terror on August 14. The first attracts only 627,459 viewers, while the second receives the (symbolic) silage with only 134,427 records. Earlier, Tarantino had released Kill Bill Volume 2 (2004) with a solo of 1.46 million and Rodriguez Sin City (2005) with 1.26 million tickets sold.

That is why Greenhouse Diptych regrets what Tarantino explains to the magazine Empire :
I think Robert Rodriguez and I assumed that people were quite close to the concept of dual programming and exploitation films. No, they were not. You are welcome. They had no idea what they were watching. What we were doing meant nothing to them. In this particular case, we were a little overconfident.
The filmmaker is still a philosopher and finds the end result very satisfactory:
“I was in London until the first weekend before the release of the film. I then suggested to Edgar and his friends that they go to Piccadilly on Friday evening to see him. When we enter the room, there are about 13 people. 20:30 pm session, release day, okay? It was a pretty humble experience. But we sat down, watched the movie and had a good time. “
