Parts of the western coast of Sakhalin Island and the mainland regions of Primorsk and Khabarovsk, located near Japan on Russia’s Pacific coast, are under tsunami threat, state news agency TASS reported Monday, citing officials.
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning and evacuation notice for residents.
Russian media quoted authorities in the port city of Vladivostok in the Primorsk region as saying anyone sailing in local waters should “urgently return to shore.”
TASS quoted authorities in the Sakhalin and Khabarovsk regions as saying the wave would not pose a threat to life.
