Pinocchio: cast, synopsis and where to see the drama

Pinocchio is one of the most successful dramas of 2014 and is now available to watch on Netflix. The K-drama begins with a fire and misleading news reports that cause the destruction of a firefighter’s family who becomes the target of the media.

Ki Ha-Myeong and his older brother have above-average intellect and are proud of their firefighter father. However, the aftermath of the fire caused the death of Ha-Myeong’s mother, and soon after, he ended up being pulled out of the ocean by an unknown man.

The man who saved the child, played by Byun Hee-Bong, carries with him a trauma: the drowning of his firstborn at sea. This makes him believe that Ki Ha-Myeong symbolizes the return of his son. From then on, Ha-Myeong is adopted by the family and lives as Choi Dal-Po, leaving behind his life and his old name.

Coincidentally, the daughter of the reporter who broke the wrong news is Choi In-ha, granddaughter of the man who found Ha-Myeong. In-Ha and Dal-Po now live together as uncle and nephew, even though they are practically the same age. Dal-Po inevitably hates In-Ha because of her mother.

As time goes by, Dal-Po, played by Lee Jong-Suk, and In-ha, played by Park Shin-Hye, grow up to become reporters, and the plot follows them as they try to do more ethical journalism and deal with what it happened in the past. The drama mainly revolves around this journey to become a journalist, as the basis of the story is the impact that news brings.

The title comes from In-Ha’s Pinocchio syndrome, a condition that causes the body to involuntarily perform certain actions when a person lies, thus making it difficult to lie – apparently a good trait for anyone who wants to become an honest reporter. In this drama, Choi In-Ha hiccups every time he lies, and until he tells the truth after lying, his hiccups don’t stop.

Ki Jae-Myeong and Ha-Myeong via Netflix/play

Although the episodes also follow the moment when the two main characters, In-Ha and Dal-Po/Ha-Myeong fall in love, some fans do not consider this to be the highlight of the story. That’s because, after a decade of believing his younger brother was dead, Ki Jae-Myeong, played by Yun Kyun-Sang, meets Dal-Po and the two bond as strangers – do they discover they are brothers?

The 2014 series has one season, with 20 episodes lasting 59 minutes. You can watch “Pinocchio” on Netflix, Viki Rakuten and Kocowa.
