Sisi on W9: Did the Empress really have an affair with Count Andras?

Warning, this article contains spoilers for the Sissi series. If you don’t want to understand anything, don’t read the following!

From Tuesday 26 December, W9 broadcasts season 2 of Sissi, a series that takes a more modern and sultry take on the story of Empress Elisabeth, played for the occasion by Dominic Davenport.

In this new stream of episodes, Sissy gets dangerously close to Count Andras, played by Italian actor Giovanni Funiati, to the point of having a passionate night with him in episode 5. But the oft-imagined love story between these two historical figures really is. did it happen

Were Sisi and Count Andras lovers?

It’s no secret: Emperor Franz Joseph had many mistresses during his marriage to Sisi, including Anna Nahovsky. An extramarital affair tolerated by noble men of the time.

It was obviously not the same for women. The empress would be putting herself in great danger if she had an affair with another man. But could she risk everything for Count Andras? Although many rumors suggest an affair between the two friends, this has never been confirmed by historians.

After the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1867, Elizabeth spent a lot of time in Hungary at Godol Castle, which was offered to her by the Hungarians. Very quickly, this place became his favorite residence.

The following year, the empress-queen gave birth to a daughter in this castle, whom she named Marie-Valeria in honor of Hungary, Valeria being the name of the region of which Budapest is the capital.

Some then attributed the paternity of the little girl to András, but the striking resemblance between Archduchess Marie-Valerie and Emperor-King Franz Joseph quickly silenced those rumours. And so far, no historian has been able to prove the existence of a romantic relationship between Sissy and Count Andras.

This obviously didn’t stop the writers of Sissy’s series, who regularly took liberties with reality, to imagine a passionate romance between the two characters in the second season.

Catch three new episodes of Sissi Season 2 this Tuesday 2nd January from 9.10pm on W9. The third season will air on Tuesday, January 9.
