The retro console that’s also a watch debuts on Kickstarter

Developer launches Kickstarter campaign with digital clock and 2-in-1 retro minigame, with 16-bit game emulation and smartphone integration; watch

Developer Jason Rogers has launched the Retro Gaming Watch digital watch campaign on Kickstarter. Essentially, it’s a wristwatch and a minigame to play 8 and 16 bit gameswith Bluetooth and limited integration with smartphones that allows you to synchronize the time, send and receive messages.

Equipped with DA14706 SoC, it features an Arm Cortex processor M33 160MHz, 1.5MB RAM internal, 8 MB QSPI RAM and 2D GPU. The settings are extremely modest compared to those of smartwatchesbut they are more than enough to satisfy the proposal of a retro, portable console that can also be used as a digital watch.

10-year project cost in 10 days

Rogers states in the crowdfunding campaign description that the Retro Gaming Watch is a personal project that took about 10 years to get off the ground. According to the developer, after all “technically all watches are jewels, so having a beautiful presentation is a secondary objective, but a mini console that is portable and faithful” to the quality of consoles up to 16-bit generation is the fulcrum of the project.

The Retro Gaming Watch (RHW) campaign launched on 12/22 with an initial goal of $35,000. In just 10 days it reached the $56,000 mark. All early access levels and 30 beta-tester spots are already sold out, leaving only the “moral support” and developer levels, which only include development kits; and base levels of the final product, with delivery estimated for November 2024.

For those interested in reselling or gifting the product, Rogers has also included support levels for lots of 10 watches, totaling $1,599, which can also be personalized with messages engraved on the body of the RGW for an additional $25.
