War in Ukraine: former player dies after a bombing in Kiev

Viktoriya Kotlyarova, 27, and her mother were victims of an attack in the country’s capital

The Ukrainian Football Federation (UAF) officially announced the tragic death of former Ukrainian player Viktoriya Kotlyarova, 27, and her mother, victims of a Russian attack during a bombing in the capital Kiev on Friday (29).

Viktoriya, who played for Spartak Chernihiv, Atex Kiev and Yatran Uman, all Ukrainian clubs, was one of 30 people shot dead in the Russian attack in the Ukrainian capital, which also injured 60 others.

In February, the war in Ukraine will turn two years old, with Russian forces maintaining control over around 20% of Ukrainian territory. In 2023, conflicts have made little progress, resulting in a scenario of stagnation.

Since June 2022, Ukrainian clubs and the national team are forced to play in neutral venues due to the conflict situation. The local league faces further challenges, playing games without spectators in cities less affected by the conflict, such as Lviv.
