Everton Ribeiro, last remnant of the Bandeira de Mello era, leaves Flamengo after 11 titles; see the numbers

After seven seasons, Everton midfielder Ribeiro has not reached an agreement to renew his contract and is no longer a Flamengo player.

New Year New Life. After seven seasons, Everton midfielder Ribeiro has not reached an agreement to renew his contract and is no longer a Flamengo player. Announced in June 2017 for 6 million euros (R$22 million), the midfielder was the last remnant of the Eduardo Bandeira de Mello era and ends his cycle after 394 games and 11 titles. In the meantime he has won three Cariocas, two Brazilians, two Libertadores, two Brazilian Super Cups, one Recopa Sudamericano and one Copa do Brasil.

Together with Diego, who was signed in mid-2016 and retired last year, Everton Ribeiro was the club’s main star until the package announced in January 2019, with Gabigol, Bruno Henrique and Arrascaeta. The idol scored 46 goals (0.11 per game on average) and distributed 61 assists (0.15 per game) during his career in Rio de Janeiro.

For all his credentials, his advanced age – he is now 34 – has weighed against the Rossoneri’s star-studded squad, and Ribeiro lost his starting role in 2023, when he became something of a “luxury reserve”.

Without a renewal agreement with the Rio club, the 34-year-old midfielder accepted the two-year offer to play for Bahia. He will reunite with coach Rogério Ceni, who guided the player between 2020 and 2021.

CAREER RESPECT

Flamengo was the team where Everton played the most and won titles, but his career had already been successful much earlier. Starting with Al-Ahli, from the United Arab Emirates, where he was before moving to Flamengo. In the Middle East the midfielder played 106 games, scored 26 goals and provided 15 assists, for a total of 51 appearances. He also won four trophies and left as the club’s idol.

But it was at Marcelo Oliveira’s Cruzeiro that he stood out on the national scene. Ribeiro only played for Raposa two seasons, 2013 and 2014, but both were unforgettable. As well as being two consecutive Brazilian champions, the midfielder was also voted star of the competition on both occasions.

Having won two further Brasileirão with Flamengo in 2019 and 2020, no one has won more tournament titles than him in the last decade, with four. Based on these numbers it is worth expressing an editorial opinion: Éverton Ribeiro was the best player in Brazilian football in the 2010s.
