The new series, set in the world of Berlin’s La Casa de Papel, is a spin-off centered on the iconic character played by Pedro Alonso. In this prequel to the Netflix hit, a gentleman thief plans the heist of the century to steal €44 million worth of jewelry in Paris.
He arrives in the French capital with a new group of robbers, consisting of Kayla, a computer genius (Michelle Jenner), Damian, a professor and right-hand man (Tristan Ulloa), Cameron, a hothead (Begona Vargas), a loyal accomplice. King (Julio Peña) and brutal Swiss Army knife Bruce (Joel Sanchez).
So the group has to blend in with the crowd and pretend to be ordinary tourists in Paris. It also involves contacting the French people to defeat them or hide their true identity. Therefore, some of them have to express themselves in the language of Moliere.
If the exercise was easier for some, especially for Michelle Jenner, whose mother is French, or Tristan Ullois, who was born in Orléans and who learned French, it was more difficult for others. But they all played the game and came out with flying colours, as did Pedro Alonso, the translator from Berlin.
The Spanish actress told us in an interview that she has always liked French culture and for good reason, her partner is French! Obviously, this gave him a slight advantage in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation, even if he admits that he doesn’t speak French with her every day.
“I’d do anything for love”he confided. “But in addition to being French, my partner is also very intelligent. So when I tried to speak to him in French, he answered in English, then I answered in English. And finally, I didn’t answer. I really managed to learn French, but my heart didn’t speak it want.”
The Berlin interpreter also noted that the team could work “Great Coach” : “He helped us prepare different scenes and make us feel like we were actually speaking French. It was a dream.”.
In the series, Pedro Alonso has some interactions with French people, such as Mamma Touro, Camilla, or the waiters in the restaurants and other Parisian bars he frequents. Even if his Spanish accent remains very pronounced, we can appreciate the Berlin star’s efforts!
