The Spanish fan who was imprisoned in Iran for 15 months returns home

Santiago Cogedor, a fan who attempted to walk from Spain to Qatar, ended up arrested in Iran after paying homage to the young woman killed in that country

Spanish fan Santiago Sanchez Cogedor, arrested in Iran in October 2022, was finally released on Tuesday (2). He was trying to cross his country and Qatar on foot, in time to attend the World Cup in the Middle East. But, halfway through the work, he performed a tribute that was not looked upon favorably by the Iranian authorities, who decided to arrest him.

The reason for the arrest was the fact that Santiago had taken a photo on the grave of the young Mahsa Amini, who died in September. She ended up being detained at the time because she was not wearing the hijab, the traditional veil worn by Muslim women. The “morality police”, a militarized group linked to the Iranian government, arrested the 22-year-old woman, who was found dead three days later. The case has shocked Iranian and international public opinion, provoking a series of protests inside and outside the country.

While chronicling his journey on social media, Santiago did not fail to pay tribute to Mahsa. However, the fan ended up intercepted by the Iranian police and was arrested. Since then, the Spanish embassy has done its best to negotiate his release. Finally, on the 31st, the agency announced that Santiago’s release from prison was close.

“I can’t even believe it. It’s been a very long, very difficult period, but I’m here, in my country. We don’t know how lucky we are to have been born here in Spain. Carrying hatred and resentment is cowardice,” said a relieved Sánchez, who he continued to read a letter from his cellmates, who congratulated him on his release from prison.
