Ex-factory prices fell 0.43% in November


According to IBGE data, the drop in prices came after three consecutive increases: in October, for example, a positive change of 1.07% was recorded




According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in November 2023 the producer price index (PPI) recorded a deflation (drop in prices) of 0.43%. The indicator measures the change in prices of products leaving Brazilian factories.

The deflation came after three consecutive price increases. In October, for example, inflation was 1.07%. With the November result, the PPI has accumulated deflation rates of 4.89% in the first 11 months of 2023 and 6.09% in 12 months.

Thirteen of 24 industrial businesses showed deflation in November, with a focus on extractive industries (-7.09%), other chemicals (-1.36%) and vehicles (-0.12%).

On the other hand, ten activities recorded inflation, with a particular focus on the food sector (0.56%) and oil refining and biofuels (0.83%). The rubber and plastic sector maintained the same prices as in October.

Among the four main economic categories of industry, deflations of 0.40% were recorded in capital goods, i.e. machinery and equipment used in the production sector; 0.66% in intermediate goods, i.e. industrialized inputs used in the production sector; and 0.18% in semi- and non-durable consumer goods. Consumer durables recorded inflation of 0.31%.

The cumulative result over the 12 months was -6.09% in November, against -6.18% in October. The four most intense changes compared to the same month of 2022 were: other chemicals, -18.66%; paper and cellulose, -16.96%; oil refining and biofuels, -16.71%; and metallurgy, -11.35%. The sectors that most influenced the aggregate result were: oil refining and biofuels (-2.09%); other chemical products (-1.66%); Food

(-0.74%); and metallurgy (-0.70%).

Among the main economic categories, the November result was as follows: -0.40% for investment goods (BK); -0.66% in intermediate goods (BI); and -0.09% in consumer goods (BC), with an observed change in consumer durables (BCD) of 0.31% and in semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods (BCND), -0.18% .
