Zagallo and his passion for the number 13

The only four-time world champion, Zagallo died on Friday evening at the age of 92.

The relationship between Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo and the number 13 continued throughout the career and life of the only four-time world champion. The superstition began with his faith and the influence of his wife Alcina. Like Zagallo, she was a devotee of Saint Anthony, whose commemorative date in the Catholic religion is celebrated on 13 June.

After marrying Alcina, Velho Lobo wore the number 13 jersey during his playing days and continued to focus on the number as a coach and coordinator, but also in his personal life. It was he who immortalized the number in Brazilian football and has always been honored with 13.

The Brazilian idol tried to create associations and find “signs” in sentences involving the number, such as “champion of Brazil”, which has 13 letters.

Zagallo won two World Cups as a player (1958 and 1962), one as a coach (1970) and another as technical coordinator (1994), as well as countless other titles with the Brazilian national team.

An irreparable loss, Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo leaves behind great fans and an incredible history in Brazilian and world football. The former player and coach of the Brazilian national team died on Friday night (5) at the age of 92.
