The Boeing 737 MAX-9 is used by Copa Airlines on routes between Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Panama

The United States commercial flights with the model suspended Boeing 737 MAX-9, after a door opened mid-flight, last Friday, 5. And in Brazil, what will happen? A National Agency for Civil Aviation (Anac) informed that the ban is not necessary in the country because there would be no operation with the MAX-9.

However, the airline Copa Airlines says that the model of the aircraft is used on routes from Panama to Brazil (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro). To the EstadaoCopa has informed that it has temporarily suspended the operations of 21 aircraft of the model, until all have undergone the necessary technical review.

The company says it has already started technical inspections and expects the plane to return to flight paths safely within 24 hours. “The airline team is working to minimize the impact on its passengers, although some delays and cancellations are expected due to this situation which is beyond the airline’s control.”

According to company information, the Boeing 737 MAX-9 is available in 2 configurations: 13 Boeing 737 MAX 9-A aircraft, with 150 seats in the main cabin, plus 16 seats in Business Class; and 4 Boeing 737 MAX 9-B aircraft, with 162 seats in the main cabin and 12 seats in the business cabin.

In a note, Anac informs that “the Cup fleet includes the Boeing 737-900, which is a different model from the 737 MAX-9 (it just has a similar nomenclature)”.

According to information from FlightAwarea flight tracking site, a flight that would have taken place on the morning of Saturday the 6th, at 10:45, from Rio de Janeiro to Panama, on board the Boeing 737 MAX-9 was cancelled, but another with the same model take-off is scheduled for Sunday 7th at 11.00.

Emergency landing of the 737 MAX-9 in the USA

The model made an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon due to a problem that caused it to crash. part of the plane’s fuselage explodedleaving a hole in the plane during flight.

The crash adds to the troubled history of the Boeing 737 MAX class of planes. In 2018 and 2019, two serious accidents involving the model resulted in the deaths of 346 people and the suspension of flights with the aircraft for 20 months.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decision affects some models of the 737 Max-9, those that have a cap in the center cabin, or a paneled exit instead of being used as a door. According to the FAA, the decision affects approximately 171 aircraft worldwide.

In a statement released this Saturday, Boeing said it agrees with and fully supports the FAA’s decision to require immediate inspections of 737-9 aircraft with the same configuration as the affected aircraft.

“Safety is our top priority. We deeply regret the impact this event has had on our customers and their passengers,” the company said.

According to the company, a technical team is monitoring the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
