“The Last of Us” dominates the technical Emmy Awards

HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama “The Last of Us” was the big winner of primetime at the Creative Arts Emmys, taking home eight awards at the ceremony held Saturday (6/1) in Los Angeles. Winning categories included Best Guest Actor in a Drama, which went to Nick Offerman for his role as Bill in one of the series’ most talked-about episodes, and Best Guest Actress for Storm Reid, who played Riley in a flashback chapter. The other trophies were won in the technical categories: editing, title design, prosthetic make-up, sound editing, mixing and visual effects (VFX).

The Television Academy ceremony was held without a live broadcast at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, serving as a pre-Emmy event. The awards, dedicated to the so-called “technical categories”, take place over two days, with a new series of awards for reality, non-fiction and variety scheduled this Sunday (1/7), for a total of almost 100 trophies before of the so-called Primetime Emmys telecast on January 15th.

Other highlights

The awards also highlighted HBO’s “The White Lotus,” FX/Hulu’s “The Bear” and Netflix’s “Wandinha” with four awards each — half of what “The Last of Us” won. “The White Lotus” won Emmys for music supervision, casting, hair and score. “Wandinha” was awarded for costumes, makeup, opening music and set design. “The Bear” won awards for casting, editing, sound editing and mixing.

Both “Treta” and the final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will appear next, with three Emmys each.

The awards for best actor and guest actress in a comedy went to Judith Light in “Poker Face” and Sam Richardson in “Ted Lasso.”

Best categories of television films and musicals

The evening awarded Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” the Emmy for best television movie of the year, as well as best musical composition.

The music categories also awarded Ed Sheeran his first Emmy. He won the Best Original Song category for “A Beautiful Game,” featured in the “Ted Lasso” series. Additionally, frequent Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman was honored for the opening song “Wandinha.”

“Wandinha” also won the second Emmy for best costume design for four-time Oscar winner costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Alice in Wonderland”).
