The Italian minister wants pressure from the G7 on the parties involved
The number of victims of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 23,084, according to a report published on Monday (8) by the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian enclave, controlled by the fundamentalist group Hamas.
The bulletin presents an increase of 249 victims recorded in the previous 24 hours and also counts 58,926 wounded in three months of war. According to local authorities, most of the victims were children and women. The conflict began on October 7, after Hamas terrorist attacks that killed 1,200 people in Israel, most of them civilians.
Amid the protracted war, protesters gathered outside the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, in Jerusalem, to demand an end to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the calling of early elections.
Some activists attempted to block access to the building, but were forcibly evicted by the police. Among the organizers of the protest were family members of those killed by Hamas on 7 October.
“My brother was killed because of a man who has been waging a private war against the entire country for eight years just to survive and escape justice. He is a narcissist who never thought about the safety of the country,” said Roni Goren Ben-Zvi, who lost his brother, Yonatan Richter, in the attacks three months ago.
Opponents accuse the Netanyahu government of not foreseeing the Hamas attacks and not doing enough to free the Palestinian group’s hostages. Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called on Monday his counterparts in France, Catherine Colonna, and in the United Kingdom, David Cameron, to discuss how the G7 can put pressure on the warring parties to limit civilian casualties: Rome will chair the group in 2024.
“The G7 countries are working with the Israeli government to develop a rapid exit from the military phase, to return to diplomacy and politics. The guarantee of Israel’s survival and security must be achieved, but it is necessary to quickly exit from this phase and aim for support from Arab countries,” Tajani said. .
