The Copilot app has low adoption despite offering GPT-4 for free

The Copilot app for Android and iOS has half the number of installs as ChatGPT in the first few days after its launch

A comparison between the number of Copilot installations and ChatGPT in the period from 28 December to 5 January it appears that the solution of Microsoft still has low public adoption despite offering free access to the GPT-4 model. The analysis was carried out by intelligence website Appfigures and suggests that consumers were not affected by the launch of chatbots of AI.

OR Copilot has arrived in an Android version on the Play Store on December 20, followed by launch for iOS on the App Store on the 28th. However, in the first days of availability, AI did not appear in the ranking of the most downloaded app stores.

Copilot x ChatGPT

In the analysis carried out by Appfigures and shared by TechCrunch, Copliot recorded 2.1 million downloads in the period from December 28 to January 5, while the consolidated ChatGPT recorded double the installations, with 4.2 million. The result is the combined total of the two app stores.

According to the chart, Microsoft’s new tool had peak interest on December 30 with 413,000 downloads, but the number has been declining ever since. On January 5, AI had just 194,000 new installs.

The report reveals an even split between Android and iOS devices for Copilot, with 59% downloads via the Play Store and 41% via the App Store. The United States leads the number of app installs with 24%, followed by Germany, India, Italy and the United Kingdom.

According to Appfigures, data shows that the launch of the Copliot app had no impact on ChatGPT. The OpenAI product already saw a slight decline in December, even before the rival application hit the market.

The comparison could indicate a problem in Microsoft’s launch strategy for the tool, such as the choice of end-of-year timeframe to release the app download or the lack of advertising with ads within stores.

Copilot has GPT-4 for free

Another eye-catching feature in this comparison is the fact that Copilot offers free access to linguistic model GPT-4 and imaging functionality provided by DALL-E 3, both available only on ChatGPT upon subscription.

The free version of ChatGPT offers the GPT-3.5 model, launched in 2022 and trained with data up to 2021. GPT-4 is considered OpenAI’s most advanced model, with a greater number of parameters used in training and the ability to perform Internet searches in real time.
