After finishing school, most young people begin to focus on the part of their professional life that most appeals to them, such as university. For Ken Kaneki, this reality was no different: he enrolled in college and went about his daily life like any other student. His best friend, Hideyoshi Nagachika, accompanied him on his routine and was always around to share a meal in the canteens.

One day, however, he falls in love with Rize Kamishiro: a beautiful woman who has interests in common with him. Even though he is shy, he decides to ask her out. At night, Rize takes him to a remote, deserted place and tries to hug him, but what seemed like just a tender gesture of affection was actually an attempt to eat him. This is because she is a Ghoul: a supernatural creature that can only eat human flesh to satisfy herself, which leads her to attack innocent people on a daily basis to satisfy her appetite.

Her attack on Kaneki severely injures him, but before she can eat him, countless construction beams fall on her, shattering her body. When Kaneki is rushed to the emergency room and quickly assigned to the operating room, the doctors realize they will have to perform an emergency transplant to save his life. So, they decide to transplant some of the monster woman’s organs into him to keep him alive.

Gradually, Kaneki realizes that he can no longer eat the daily foods he has been accustomed to all his life (such as bread, milk and animal flesh) and sees his appetite increase more and more. He is then introduced to this new reality, where the city of Tokyo is full of these creatures, called Ghouls, and he must find a way to adapt to their new dietary needs without necessarily hurting innocent people or even your best friend.
