The “Star Trek” franchise is getting a new movie from Paramount Pictures. The film will be directed by Toby Haynes, author of most of the episodes of the “Andor” series and the award-winning “USS Calister” chapter of “Black Mirror” – which, coincidentally, was inspired by “Star Trek”.
Haynes will make his feature film debut with the production, which has a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith (“The Lego Batman: The Movie”).
The synopsis has not been revealed, but the film is described as an origin story and expansion of the “Star Trek” universe, set decades before the events of the reboot of the franchise, i.e. before the events of the “Star Trek” film . released in 2009 directed by JJ Abrams. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, remains in charge of directing.
It’s worth mentioning that the franchise has already had three series set decades before James T. Kirk became captain of the USS Enterprise: “Star Trek: Enterprise,” featuring the first crew to explore the farthest galaxies, “Star Trek: Discovery” , featuring Mr. Spock’s older sister (who, paradoxically, went with her crew into the very distant future), and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” featuring the crew of that universe’s first rejected television pilot, which includes Mr. Spock, Spock. The latter two are still produced and shown by Paramount+.
Other projects
There’s no official release date, title, or synopsis for the new film yet, but this film isn’t expected to be the only new film in the series. Paramount still plans to make a fourth film with the cast of the 2009 film, with Chris Pine in the role of Captain Kirk, and, this week, star Patrick Stewart revealed that he has a meeting scheduled to discuss a film about his character, the Captain. Kirk Picard – whose series ended last year.
