The final episode of the Disney + series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” surprised fans with a surprising cameo.
The return of a legendary character from the Star Wars franchise came in the final moments of the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series.
Towards the end of the episode, Darth Vader, played by Hayden Christensen, has returned to his castle on Mustafar, having been restored following his battle with Kenobi, his former teacher, with one thing in mind: to capture Obi-Wan. .
But, seated on his throne, Vader receives a hologram message from an iconic character in the franchise: Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine. Palpatine’s message orders Darth Vader to abandon his hunt for Obi-Wan, while the Emperor questions the motives for his charge.
The participation of Palpatine / Darth Sidious had not previously been confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm. However, McDiarmid has hinted that he might make an appearance of him. “All I would say about future speculations is that if you expect the Emperor to appear soon, in the flesh, don’t hope for it,” McDiarmid said.
Many have interpreted this as just a hint that Palpatine would appear in a Star Wars animation project, which in fact will happen too, as confirmed in the “The Bad Batch” season 2 trailer.
It is unknown what other plans Lucasfilm has for the character, and McDiarmid commented on a rumor that the studio is working on a project dedicated to telling the origin story of Darth Sidious. “I think this is a very good voice,” commented the actor.
Ian McDiarmid portrayed the live-action version of Emperor Palpatine from the 1983 film “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”. Obviously, he has noticed that if the project is successful, a younger actor must take on the role of the character he immortalized in the film.
But Darth Sidious isn’t the only iconic Star Wars character to make an appearance in the final episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi”. Ewan McGregor’s character manages to make contact with the ghost of the Force of his dead master, Quin-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” has six episodes in all and is now fully available on Disney +.
