Director Elizabeth Banks took responsibility for the complete failure of the film, which earned only $73 million worldwide (including China, which was the box office booster for American films at the time), on a budget of around fifty million.

According to Banks, the film’s failure is mainly the fault of its marketing and journalists: “Most of the media wanted to say about Charlie’s Angels was that it was a feminist manifesto. People were just saying, ‘You’re the first female director of Charlie’s Angels!’ And I said, ‘There was only one series and two McG movies… What are you talking about?’ It’s not a lasting legacy either.”

I just loved the franchise, I didn’t push a feminist agenda into it. Priority was given to work, which was really annoying. This pigeonholed me and the audience into the film.

Charlie’s Angels was based on the TV series Funny Ladies, which aired from 1976 to 1981 in the United States and was rebroadcast several times in France, notably on public service. The 2019 film tells the story of Sabina, Elena and Jane’s alliance to carry out dangerous missions on behalf of a certain Charlie Townsend. Their mission is to find the technology before it falls into the wrong hands.
