The Exorcist: the trilogy loses its director and abandons the release calendar

After The Exorcist: The Devotedreboot of the 1973 horror classic, had a shaky launch at the box office and received negative reviews, David Gordon Green, director of the film who was supposed to direct a new trilogy of the franchise, abandoned the project, with Blumhouse and Universal forced to withdraw the horror film from release calendar.

The Exorcist: The Devoted begins a new trilogy based on the 1973 original. The film turns 50 in 2023, with the saga revisiting the demon Pazuzu, who possessed Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair). Ellen Burstyn, who played Regan’s mother, was also in the film, as was Blair, with a cameo.

The production presented the story of Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.), the father of a child possessed by a demonic entity. Desperate, the protagonist searches for Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who many years earlier had fought for the soul of her daughter.

Reactions to the new The Exorcist

As expected, The devotee received a barrage of negative reviews, with analyzes pointing out that the production’s attempt to repeat the success of the original made the script boring and lacking in surprises – not to mention the lack of emotion and outcome in Burstyn’s participation, considering its relevance and what it represents to fans of the franchise.

It is worth mentioning that it is normal for horror film sequels to do poorly, especially successful and pioneering films in the film market such as The exorcist.

The film holds the title of highest-grossing horror film of all time, receiving 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The task for the eventual director who takes over the ship, therefore, will not be easy. Check out reviews of the film here!
