ONE war of the galaxies The X-Wing Fighter model used in George Lucas’ 1977 sci-fi epic fetched a staggering $2.3 million at auction Tuesday night, according to Prop Store Auction. The Red Leader X-Wing miniature model display combination created by Industrial Light & Magic is estimated to be worth $500,000 to $1 million. According to the auction house, the final price was $2,375,000.
The X-Wing model was used Star Wars: A New Hope For Red X-Wing squadron leader Garven Dreys, played by the late Drew Henley.
The model is extraordinarily rare, as most of it was destroyed by pyrotechnics during the filming of the film’s climactic battle sequence on the Death Star.
“The model display matches the specific ‘Piro’ footage of the Red Leader engine exploding in the film,” said Brandon Alinger, former director of Propstore. Forbes. “There are several behind-the-scenes photos taken at Industrial Light and Magic that show the model very well. All the scratches and brush marks on the paint may look exactly like the 1976 photos.
Read part of the lot description, “The X-wing fighter model is very well maintained and remains in excellent condition. The light, hard foam remains solid, while the original unrestored paintwork is in excellent condition, with only subtle flaking in small areas. One of the laser cannons exhibits a slight wobble, while the laser cannon tips constructed with a single scratch are loose. The Piro X-wing was designed to be attached to a C-bracket that had a hole in the rear of the fuselage or hanging from a cable during firing. At the top of the fuselage there are several small holes connected to the model cable that hangs. The piece comes with a custom aluminum stand that supports the model via a fuselage, as well as a wooden shipping crate.
News of the model’s sale comes nearly a month after the death of Colin Cantwell, the concept artist who created the X-Wing movie for spaceships. He was 90 years old.
The winner really nailed it with that!
