Paul Mescal has a romance with Andrew Scott in ‘All of Us Strangers’
Paul Mescal argues that straight actors can play homosexual characters — under one condition. In All of Us Strangers, he lives a romance with Andrew Scottbut he is, in his off-screen life, an avowedly heterosexual man.
“It depends on who is in charge to tell the story”, he argued in an interview with The Sunday Times (via NME). “The problem is that there have been so many queer performances in film that have been offensive, but that’s because the directors and actors haven’t been careful.”
About the feature film in which he plays a gay man, Paul pointed out: “I don’t think this film fits into that discussion, whatever it is. And that’s it.”
The actor had already spoken about intense scenes he starred in alongside Scott: “You have the character of Andrew Scott, Adam, who is in his early 40s and has a difficult relationship with sex. And then, you have Harry, who is much more comfortable. Harry serves as a safe space for him to re-explore his sexuality, which I find very moving and very sexy.”
“I think sex on film, or in any other form of media, when it can be healing and sexy at the same time, that’s when it’s really the best.”
