Expectation x reality: how to avoid frustrations in plastic surgery

When it comes to plastic surgery there are many expectations at play and they all need to be aligned between doctor and patient

Transparent dialogue between doctor and patient is one of the main factors for any surgery to go as planned. It is natural for doubts, insecurities and expectations to arise regarding the outcome of plastic surgery. This happens especially in cases of aesthetic interventions, which involve the individual’s self-esteem and his health, not only physical but also mental.

Understand the limitations of plastic surgery

According to plastic surgeon Dr. Fernando Lamana, a specialist in breast and body contouring and member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), it is essential that the patient understands what plastic surgery entails.

“The prospect of a perfect or unattainable result is the main cause of frustration in plastic surgery. To obtain a satisfactory result, the patient must be aware of what is possible with the proposed procedure,” he explains.

Patients seeking plastic surgery often come to the office. In some cases, comparing the results achieved by some celebrities with those they aim to achieve. Aligning reality with expectations, however, is one of the main tasks of the medical team. This way you can avoid possible frustrations regarding the outcome of the surgery.

The surgeon explains that, when faced with patients with unrealistic expectations, the medical team must propose a frank dialogue, bringing to the consultation what can really be achieved with the procedure. “During the preoperative period it is necessary to be very clear about what is statistically likely to be achieved after surgery,” he says.

The role of the surgeon

Just as some patients end up exceeding their expectations regarding surgical outcomes, in some cases, clinics and industry professionals fuel illusions, selling unattainable expectations that end up making patients feel regret.

In this regard, the doctor explains that the same code of medical ethics prohibits professionals in the sector from commodifying medicine. “You shouldn’t promise impossible results to achieve financial gain,” protests Lamana. The professional reaffirms the responsibility and commitment that plastic surgeons must have when dealing with the self-esteem and well-being of patients.

“Plastic surgery, if performed correctly, allows the patient to recover their self-esteem and confidence. Pregnant women who have significant changes in their breasts and abdomen can recover their shape and aesthetic appearance through plastic surgery, for example Young women who have significant sagging of the face can regain her youth even through surgical interventions”, emphasizes the surgeon.

He explains further: “Likewise, patients with excessively small breasts, who often don’t dare to wear a bikini, can regain their confidence with a simple 40-minute procedure. People with an unsightly nose instead of face can regain their confidence” beauty increases through surgery. This is the beauty of plastic surgery, the possibility of integrating the beautiful work of nature,” he concludes.
